See inside the Penguin house!

Playful Penguins is open Tuesday - Friday from 8am-6pm. We close for Bank Holidays and for the period between Christmas and New Year. We also close for the last week in June (we all go to Glastonbury Festival - keep an eye out for us on the BBC coverage!).

We are a home from home setting and the general rule of thumb is that we take the children anywhere that you would take them. We are members of the Wild Place, Puxton Park and the aquarium. We also make good use of free activities such as the parks, woods, museums, libraries and local toddler groups. If we stay at home we might bake, play in the garden, play with the toys, make a den, do some messy play like painting or making etc.

Mini Penguin Playroom

So this is where our mini penguins spend part of their day.  The toys are all age appropriate (0-3 years) and the open shelving means the children can select whatever resources they want.

We encourage children to put one toy away before they take another one down so things don't get too chaotic.

All the children eat together in this room and they all play together first thing and last thing during the day.

King Penguin Playroom (coming soon June 2022)

This is more of a pre-school-orientated room for children aged 3+ years.  We still use the open shelving in this room so self-selection of toys is very easy for little hands.

We have lots of toys that are geared more towards academic learning such as alphabet threading tools and posters which demonstrate letter and number formation.

We also have a small home corner and often have displays in another area connected to our monthly topics.  Play in this room is slightly more structured than in the Mini Penguin room with circle time in the morning and afternoon.

The Garden Area

The Mini Penguins really enjoy watching the King Penguins when they are out in the garden.

The King Penguins are able to ask if they want to go into the garden and they are quite sufficient at getting their own coats and shoes, we always ensure there is a member of staff watching those who want to play outside which they can access at all time.

We tend to go out quite a lot but if it's a day when we are home we might all use the garden together or rotate use with the Mini Penguins playing out first and the King Penguins playing out while the younger ones sleep.  We aren't rigid though and as ever we do what works best on the day.
